A Visit to Talbingo NSW
By traveltripz on May 3, 2007 in Australia
Yesterday, Val (hubby) and I set off to go for a drive to a little place that I fell in love with when I visited it for the first time in 2006.
Talbingo is a little township of 390 people, which is nestled in a valley beside lake Jounama (it’s really a dam) which lies at the bottom of the Tumut 3 Power Station. The original town of Talbingo was flooded in 1978 by the Jounama dam as part of the Snowy River Hydro Electric scheme.
Talbingo was the birthplace of Miles Franklin, the author of ‘My Brilliant Career’, which was later made into a movie starring Judy Davis, Sam Neil and Wendy Hughes.
There is a service station, golf course, motel, primary school, general store, country club and a lodge where you can find accommodation and a restaurant. The town relies on tourism and many families stop by every summer for water skiing on Talbingo or Blowering Dam, bushwalking and exploring Koscuiosko National Park. In the winter, Talbingo makes a great place to stay as a central area for anyone visiting Mt Selwyn and other snow fields.
Picturesque Talbingo was well worth the drive of 3.5 hours from Tuggeranong in Canberra. .
