Our hotel was very close to St Marks Square so it was just an easy stroll to take in the sight of this majestic Basilica. The Basilica di San Marco (Saint Mark’s Basilica) church in Venice began in 829 (consecrated in 832) as an ecclesiastical structure to house and honor the remains of St. Mark that had been brought from Alexandria. St. Mark became the patron saint of Venice, replacing St. Theodore. His attribute of a winged lion became the official symbol of the Venetian Republic. San Marco Basilica was built beside the Palazzo Ducale or Doges’ Palace and served…

First Days in Venice

We arrive at the hotel and are taken to our room. Uh oh, this won’t do. They have given us a double bed, well no this  definitely won’t do, we had specifically booked a twin room. So off we go down to reception to see if another room can be found, and sure enough there is a room at the top of some rather steep stairs, almost like a ladder, with a heavy gold colored rope adorned with red braid, with which to haul ourselves up. Lots of fun and good exercise. The view from this room was over some…

Italy at Last

We board the train and settle back to relax and watch the beautiful scenery through Austria and on into Italy. A young couple with their toddler and baby join us in our carriage. We get talking, as the young woman speaks some English, we of course, are hopeless at anything other than English. It turns out that the young lady had spent some time in Australia so we had lots to talk about. They were off to visit her parents in the Austrian Alps. We compared the weather between the two countries, the work situation, education and politics, with the…

Travel Safe Handbags

Yesterday we went shopping for a couple of handbags for when we head over to the States in July. We normally like to have something with lots of compartments to fit maps, a water bottle and various other things that you need when you are out and about. We had heard about a brand of handbags specifically made for travelers so this is what we were looking for. These bags had a number of benefits although it also meant paying double the cost of a regular handbag but the benefits appeared to be worth it in the long run. The…

SeeYourHotel.com

Now this is a great little website for the seasoned traveller. www.seeyourhotel.com is a website that provides a map based facility to allow you to find hotels on a map. I had a quick play using New York as an example as this is where we will be heading off to in July of this year. The website allows you to search for a location by using either the search facility or the drop down boxes provided. Once you have selected your location the map adjusts to your selection and all the hotels in that city or town will appear…

Down the Salt Mines in Salzburg

Salzburg has lots to see and do and while we were going through the brochures for local events we came across a tour to the Salt Mines. Well this sounded like fun and we rang and booked a tour for the next day.Next morning we are up bright and early again and have an early breakfast in the well lit dining room with the subtle frescoes on the walls, and off we go. We had to wait for quite some time until one couple turned up but finally we are bundled into a car and off we go. The guide…

The Sound of Music Tour Salzberg Austria

We are up bright and early today as we are off on the Sound of Music tour. Both Paula and I are fans of the musical so it is a great thrill to be seeing where the original von Trapp family lived and to see where a number of the film scenes were shot. Once everyone has boarded the coach we set off and our english speaking guide is full of information about the movie and the von trapp family. The music from the film plays in the background setting the scene. We drive past historical landmarks and through the…

We hop on a train to travel to beautiful city of Salzburg, the home of Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart. Here I am composing an email to family and friends back in Australia on my Pocketmail. This nifty little device allows me to write emails and send them through a phone line when I get to a hotel or into a town. Ohmigawd, just look at that bottle of coke. I haven’t drunk coke for some years now, trying to be healthy. We didn’t stay in the old town but our hotel was within walking distance. Paula had been to Salzburg before…

Leaving Talbingo – Kangaroos & Emus

After a short stroll around the Talbingo main centre, and a cup of tea taken outside the local store, we set off to head back home to Canberra. On the way out of town there were lots of kangaroos and a few emu’s, so we diligently took some photos. There are emus in here, trust me.   The black clouds rolled in as we were driving away, and this particular sight with the sun streaming through the black clouds was worth a picture or two. We also called in to see the ‘dog on the tuckerbox’, which is situated at…
