The Fourth of July Fireworks in New York

Later in the evening we joined thousands of New Yorkers to attend the 2007 Fourth of July fireworks on the banks of the East River. We almost didn’t make it because as soon as we left our hotel it started to pour down with rain. Fortunately there were plenty of enterprising vendors selling umbrellas so we bought one for $10 and proceeded down to the river. Well we didn’t get too far very fast as every man and his dog were also heading the same way so it was wall to wall people for most of the way. As we…

We head off up 42nd St to go and pick up our tour bus tickets, but as often happens we get side tracked and end up at Madam Tussauds. Our New York passes give us free entry, I did weaken and buy a tourist magazine of the exhibition. Well we thoroughly recommend a visit to Madam Tussards. The exhibition starts with a party scene with loads of stars such as John Travolta, Nicholas Cage, Susan Sarandon and the Pitts to name a few. After a round of photographs we ventured to the Chamber of Horrors. Well what can I say,…

New York Day 3 – Pershing Square Cafe

Slept in again this morning until 8am. The day is overcast and a little cooler. Rain is expected later today, hopefully it won’t mean that the 4th of July fireworks are canceled later tonight. We are having breakfast at the Pershing Square café, opposite Grand Central station. The café has a very traditional ambience. There are all nationalities dining in and the buzz of people making plans for the day fills the air. We settle on the New York breakfast at $15 each. The meal consists of 2 eggs and bacon, cooked to perfection, with fried potato scrumble, orange juice,…

We had a nice sleep in and set off for Planet Hollywood in Times Square to pick up our New York Passes. These are great value for money as they allow the user free entry or reduced entry costs into a number of attractions as well as shopping discounts. We then headed down Broadway to check out the theatres and to find where our show will be. (We will be seeing Mama Mia on Thursday night.) Our next stop was Macys, which is reported to be the biggest department store in the world. We went looking for shoes figuring that…

Welcome to the United States

All aliens on entering the US are required to fill out a green form. Nothing unusual about that, however the questions are amusing to say the least. For instance: Question: Do you have a communicable disease; physical or mental disorder or are you a drug abuser or addict. Question: Have you ever been or are you now involved in espionage or sabotage or in terrorist activities or genocide; or between 1933 and 1945 were involved in any way with persecutions associated with Nazi Germany or its allies? Another question involves moral turpitude etc and ends ‘are you seeking entry to…

The plane trip was long, very, very, very long. We spent the time watching movies, playing games and eating. Not very much sleeping was involved. When we arrived in Los Angeles we had to leave the plane. We thought it would be like Singapore where we could have a shower and watch a movie until the plane left. However, we spent our time firstly in the customs queue where the staff started to panic as passengers traveling onto New York were running out of time to reboard the plane. More and more people kept arriving from other planes and the…

After a cold early morning start in Canberra at 6.50am we are still sitting at Sydney airport waiting for our flight to the US. We are surrounded by a contingent of young American students who are ambassadors of the People to People program. We are just amusing ourselves watching the endless stream of them going to the food vending machines. The flight has been delayed for another half hour so it looks like we won’t get away until after 11am now. Once we are on board, we settle down for the long flight to Los Angeles before continuing onto New…
