Archive for February, 2008

After a rather long day having set out from our Hawaii hotel at 5am,  and finally arriving at The Celebrity Hotel at around 6pm we were just looking forward to having a shower and having a cup of tea. Paula had already advised me not to expect too much from the hotel as it was only 2 star. So it was nice to be pleasantly surprised when we arrived. The check in process was easy and the receptionist was friendly. The foyer has pictures of stars and some comfortable chairs to sit while you wait for transport and it is…

The 80th Academy Awards 2008 – The Oscars!

Now that the writers strike is over, the Oscars are going ahead and we have arrived here in Los Angeles right in the middle of all the preparation.  Actually the 80th Academy Awards takes place tomorrow night, we of course will be in Las Vegas at the Affiliate Summit so will miss all the live excitement. The annual Oscar presentation which recognises the best in their field for the past year, has been held since 1929. A large block of Hollywood Boulevard has been cordoned off with steel fencing and the lighting and speakers and the red carpet have all…

Grauman’s Chinese Theatre – Los Angeles

Yesterday we made a visit to Grauman’s Chinese Theatre – or to be exact, the outside of the theatre which is famous for the foot and hand prints of some of Hollywood’s most famous celebrities. The theatre is set within a courtyard and is quite sought after for studio premiers in Hollywood. Of course it was packed with tourists all wanting to take plenty of photos of the hand and foot prints. It was also full of touters trying to sell us things including a young man by the name Jamal aka Young Mystro who pushed his CD into our hands…

Arrival in LA

Landing in LA this time is so much different from the last time, when we were on our way to New York. The flight from Hawaii is of course a domestic flight within the US so as we had already been through customs we did not have to repeat the process. LA airport is not very user friendly.  We collected our bags and made our way outside to find a shuttle bus. This proved to be somewhat challenging as the signage is almost non-existant, but we finally found where the shuttle buses leave from and had a short wait for the shuttle…

Aqua Wave Hotel, Wailkik, Honolulu – Hotel Review

While in Hawaii we stayed at the Aqua Wave Hotel which we found through Trip Advisor where it was rated in the top 10 hotels in Waikiki. The foyer is plain with  a reception desk on one side and the concierge and a couple of shops on the other. There is a chinese restaurant at the end of the corridor-like entrance. The staff were very friendly and helpful and check in was easy and painless apart from the fact that our room wasn’t ready. This was through no fault of the hotel, as we had arrived early after a 10…

Slept in this morning and when we finally got up we headed down to the beach.  Today it was crowded and no wonder, the weather is amazing. We had planned to do so many things – go paragliding, attend a luau, check out the many memorials around and go to Paradise point.  And what did we do, absolutely nothing in the tourist line at all except wander around Waikiki through the shops, the International Market, the Hyatt Hotel lobby which was pretty spectacular with it’s indoor waterfall. We then headed to Kings Village which was made up of quaint looking…

Holidaying in Hawaii – Waikiki

On our approach into Hawaii we flew over parts of Honolulu and Pearl Harbour. We noticed a lot of military aircraft both as we were flying over as well as at the airport. After collecting our bags we were ushered upstairs to catch a WikiWiki which is made up of three separate bus bodies joined together. We found it somewhat amusing to be driven a few miles down the road to customs, usually customs is in the arrival terminal building in most other aiports we have come across. Checking through customs was quite uneventful apart from the fact that for the first time ever we both had officers…

Hawaiian Airlines Review

We arrived at the Sydney International quite early in the day for our flight to Hawaii and had to wait for the Hawaiian Airlines check in counters to open at 6pm. Although our flight wasn’t until 9pm, it is a 3 1/2 drive from Canberra and Paula had a few things to do in Sydney. So we made sure we had plenty of time, especially after our trip to Bangkok when we nearly missed the plane because of domestic flight connections. Booking in was a pleasant experience and our customer relations operator, Angela, was extremely helpful with the seating. She…

Paula and I head of for Sydney in just a little while.  Paula’s brother Wal, who recently returned from an overseas trip to the UK and Europe, is driving us to Sydney to catch our  plane.  The first stop will be Hawaii, where we will be staying at the Aqua Wave Hotel (reveiw to follow – have to get there first). So we will be in Hawaii for two nights before heading off to Los Angeles.  As we will be gone for 7 whole weeks, I have spent the morning on the phone catching up with the family.  Demelza called in to…
