Grand Canyon Archives

I generally like to keep posts in some sort of chronological order. But I have fallen behind a bit while having way too much fun. But today was a highlight so I am going to add this post out of order.  I know – but it just has to be done. Last night we decided to take a trip to the Grand Canyon so I hopped online to check out what was available and found a company that seemed to have just what we wanted, and that was the Grand Canyon Air Tours from Las Vegas. We selected the Original…

The Grand Canyon is spectacular.  I defy anyone to stand at the rim and not be swept away by the grandeur and spectacular beauty before them. Just take a look at the photo we took on our holiday, as you can see there is snow still on the ground. As we stated in a  previous post, we spoke to a man in Ash Fork who told us that it was just a big hole in the ground nothing to waste your time on. Well he was definitely wrong and if you get the chance to go to the Grand Canyon…

We spent most of our time at the Grand Canyon at the Holiday Inn in Tusayan which is approximately 2 miles from the entrance to the Grand Canyon National Park entrance. This is a really convenient spot to base youself while you are at the Canyon and it is reasonably priced,  mostly because it is not right on the Canyon rim. Staying at any of the Grand Canyon rim hotels automatically doubles the price for a room. The Holiday Inn hotel is situated on Highway 64 and there are a number of other hotels in close proximity as well as a…

There is a great little cafe in Tusayan called, funnily enough the Tusayan Café. It is found two miles south of the entrance to the Grand Canyon National Park on Highway 64. The service is very good and the staff are pleasant, helpful and friendly. This is a typical roadside café with paper napkins and placemats. It is clean and presentable with paintings of the Grand Canyon on the walls. The food at the Tusayan Café is well presented and delicious. We had missed breakfast at the hotel so stopped by before heading into the Grand Canyon National Park and…

Hotel Review – Kachina Lodge Grand Canyon

Check in is at 4pm and we had arrived too early to check in. However the young man checked our reservation and suggested we return around 2pm to see if the room was available. When we did return at around 2.30pm the room still wasn’t ready so we sat in the lobby with a number of other people who were also waiting to check in. The young lady behind the counter said she would list us as being in the hotel so that housekeeping would move our room up the list of rooms to be serviced. Check in for the…

Views of the Grand Canyon

Here are some of the views of the Grand Canyon that we took a week ago.  It is a great place to visit especially in March when there is still snow around. These views were taken at different times of the day.  Paula hadn’t been in snow before and when she stepped into it her feet sunk into the icy snow. There is a photo of her getting the ice out of her shoes. We hadn’t thought there would be ice in the Grand Canyon so we hadn’t waterproofed our shoes.  ARA shoes are meant for walking not wading through…

During our stay at the Grand Canyon we ate at both the the El Tovar Restaurant and the Arizona Room at the Bright Angel Restaurant. The El Tovar restaurant is apparently world renowed although after eating breakfast here I am sure it is not because of the quality of its food. Maybe lunch and dinner are better but our breakfast was just plain terrible. It is the first bad meal we have had during our trip to the US so far. We both ordered the two egg breakfast with bacon and fried potatoes which came with a strawberry on the…

From Tusayan To The Grand Canyon

This morning we head down at 9am for the complimentary breakfast which is much better than we expected. There were omelets, sausage patties, a variety of breads, cereals, coffee, tea, fruit juices and fruit. Once we have eaten we pack the car and head off from the Holiday Inn in Tusayan to the Grand Canyon a few miles away. We stop at the toll gate and pay the $25.00 per vehicle park entrance fee. The fee for pedestrians and cyclists is $12 per person and the entrance fee is valid for seven consecutive days from the date of purchase on…
