The Top Things to See and Do in New York

New York People either love it or hate it. Either way, it is one place that everyone should visit at least once in their lives. It’s a non-stop party.  The night lights are amazing.  Everywhere you look is familiar because you have seen it in a film or a picture – so you feel at home immediately. The noise is incessant – car horns blaring, NYPD blue car sirens, people shouting.  Smells pervade the air – street vendors selling bagels and coffee.  Depending on what time of year you visit, the heat is phenomenal or the cold is painful. In…

The New York Pass

Before heading off to the States it was recommended  that we purchase The New York Pass by a friend. She had used it when she was in New York and said it was great value. We did a bit of research about it on the net and eventually purchased it through the official The New York Pass website prior to leaving Australia. We have to say that we are glad that she recommended it to us because it definitely turned out to be value for money. Which card did we buy? We purchased a 3 day card which cost us $96USD each as we received…

Our last day in New York

This morning we slept in as long as possible and then headed down to the breakfast area as we had free vouchers with our accommodation. We both ordered eggs benedict which came with tea and orange juice and we also ordered a fruit smoothie as well at $8 each!! Still it was worth it. I have to say that the fruit was really tasty everywhere we went and the fruit smoothies are so full of flavor and it’s the one thing that the Americans don’t seem to add extra sweetness to. I found the sweet taste of things a bit…

Back to New York

This morning we got up early for our flight to New York which was leaving Miami International Airport at 7.45am. We decided to set the clock for 4.30am. This might sound early but we had to drive to the airport and we knew that it would be easy for us to get lost. As it turned out we did the right thing. Crawling out of bed after spending a late night at Disney World wasn’t the most fun thing to do but we got ready and headed out to the car to head off to the airport. We drove around…

We get off the bus to go and have a look at ground zero. A memorial plaque has been put in place but the area is still just rubble with cranes and graders working the area. The bus takes us past the UN building. The New York Stock Exchange was under police guard and closed to the general public. We heard on the news later that night that employees in the Wall St area had received death threats. It is the richest area in the richest city in the world, which makes it an interesting stroll. From Wall St we…

Today we have to make up for lost time as there are a number of things we couldn’t do because a – of the rain b – I have been sick. So we caught the hop on hop off bus and headed downtown to the Empire State Building. Our New York pass meant we could bypass the ticket queue on the lower ground floor.  We couldn’t avoid the queue to go up to the 86th floor observatory though. So we queued with many others for about 30 minutes.  Everyone who arrived had their  our photo taken in front of a…

Mama Mia on Broadway

On Thusday night, 5th of July, we went to see the Broadway production of Mama Mia the musical at the Wintergarden theatre. We had prepurchased our tickets months ago in Australia and had no idea what our seats would be like but were pleasantly surprised when we found that we were 5 rows from the front. The theatre is not huge so even the seats at the back would have an okay view. It is an absolutely beautiful theater – very ornate with Greco-Roman style relief work with lots of cherubs and statues and the seating was comfortable.Unlike in Australia,…

Our review of the Grand Hyatt Hotel New York

So far during our time in New York we have been staying at the Grand Hyatt in Manhattan. The hotel is located right next to Grand Central Station and because of this is an ideal location for anyone coming to stay in New York. We have been here three nights so far and are extremely pleased with the hotel. Check-in was very smooth and the lady behind the counter was very pleasant and helpful. We had arrived at about 9pm at night and the room type we had requested was held for us. The hotel lobby is quite impressive and…

New York Day 4 Soup From the Soup Nazi

This morning we made our way down to Times Square to find the Gray Line Bus Company to buy our hop-on hop-off bus tickets. From what we can tell there are two bus companies in New York running these types of tours. The other is City Sights NY. Both pretty much do the same thing and charge the same price – $49 for two days of unlimited hop-ons and hop-offs on four different loops around the city. We went with Gray Line mainly because we received a $5 discount on each ticket with our  New York Pass which also gives…
