Disneyland Hong Kong is the fifth and smallest of Disney’s parks.  It opened in 2005 and is in Penny’s Bay on Lantau Island, 20 minutes from Hong Kong International Airport and is a 30-minute MTR (Mass Transit Railway) ride from Central, Hong Kong.  During its’ construction, Disney ensured that the park features Chinese culture and customs.  The park also conforms to the ideals of Feng Shui, the Chinese art of placement to enable the best energy flows.  For example, a walkway near the main entrance had a bend put into it so that good energy wouldn’t flow into the South…

Is it against the law to chew chewing gum in Singapore? Unfortunately there isn’t a simple yes or no answer to it. More like a maybe yes…. Singapore outlawed chewing gum in 1992. The main reason for this was to reduce all the clean up costs of people sticking used gum anywhere but a trash can. It may seem like a draconian measure to most, but it did work to help clean up the country. Singapore has been mocked for years over its laws restricting personal freedoms and harsh punishments. Caning is still a popular punishment, basically beating the convict…

Singapore Zoo Night Safari & Day Visit

This is one thing that shouldn’t be missed. The Night Safari at the Singapore Zoo is a great experience. We took the tram ride through but you can follow a trail through the park. The animals are held behind barriers that are well hidden so it feels like there is nothing separating us from them. Overall this was a great experience and I would definitely go back again on my next visit to Singapore. We had been to the day zoo earlier in the morning so it was great to see the nocturnal animals roaming around at night.

Chewing Gum in Singapore

Did you know that chewing gum is banned in Singapore? They banned it in 1992 because of a littering problem. It was only in 2004 that they lifted it slightly to allow for the use of gum for ‘therapeutic’ reasons. If you are travelling to Singapore ensure you don’t have any gum with you as it is strictly prohibited to import it.

Shopping in Singapore

We found that the shopping in Singapore wasn’t all that great. Maybe we missed the best areas to buy from . But from what we saw the prices were pretty much the same as in Australia so there weren’t many bargains to be had. If you are looking for bargains go to Bangkok. The shops were huge though and there is plenty of browsing to be done.

Shopping in The Indian District in Singapore

Here are some photos taken in the Indian district. There are lots of shops with all sorts of great bargains and interesting items for sale. Because we were only starting out on our journey we had to keep our purchases to a minimum. There was a street vendor  preparing takeaway food on the street corner. And our guide pointed out, what she called, Singapore’s national flag, which was the washing hanging from the windows. Looks like death approaching me in the background, all that’s missing is the scythe. The temple behind me is just amazing with its colors and intricate patterns.

Continuing On in Sensational Singapore

So here we are in Steamy Singapore and we are off to have breakfast with the Orangutan’s at the Singapore Day Zoo. What fascinating creatures the Orangutan are. Everyone in the group has photos taken with them. And then we set off to look around the zoo. The zoo is well designed and easy to navigate around, and there is lots to see. We return to Singapore and go looking for cheap shopping, which weren’t to be found. However, we did manage to get lost while taking a so called short cut back to the hotel. We walked for ages…
