Paula and I both celebrate our birthday’s next week and as I will be in Brisbane we decided to treat ourselves to lunch at the Hyatt hotel in Canberra a week ahead of time. Demelza was home from school with a sore foot? so we took her with us for the experience. I had only given her 5 minutes notice to get ready and I think it shows. The cost of the buffet is $35.00 per person and drinks and tea are not included. Something I had forgotten as in the US, soft drinks, tea and coffee are included in price. As always the…

Connor Has Arrived – Finally
While I have been traipsing around the United States having a great time, I have become a great grandmother. My grandson Stephen and his lovely partner Shanny finally welcomed their son Connor into the world. He was due on 29th February but decided to stay put for a bit longer. Steve and Shanny’s parents are all happy although everyone feels they have been thrust into grandparent and great grandparent roles way too soon. I’m sure we will all cope with our new status now we have another little one to spoil. Paula and I are heading off to have the…
More Of The New Zealand Connection
This isn’t one of our usual travel posts, but it ties in with the trip my husband Valentine and I took to New Zealand in 2007. And I wanted to make sure the kids got to see this before Paula and I set of for the US next week, and we start writing about that trip. Our beautiful niece Jenny (pictured left) sent over a number of family photos of her brother Roy’s marriage to Kay, from ‘the Old Days’ as the grandkids like to call them. And so that the kids can see that I am not the only one wearing…
An Eventful Trip to Tara
It seems to me that every time I drive to Tara it is raining and this week was no exception. We are in the process of moving from the beach in Brisbane to a rural area in Queensland which is a good 5 hour drive, although everyone tells me it is only 3-4 hours. So we are off with the car trailer loaded up with stuff in the first of our moves. We are going to do this progressively a bit at a time. Right! apart from the rain everything is going smoothly until we are on a down hill run, just…
Reminiscing Over Family Wedding Photos
Our lovely niece Jenny has just emailed through some family photos and amongst them is of Val and I when we were married and another one of us at Roy and Kays wedding a couple of years later. This is so fantastic for us as all our photos were lost years ago and we have no photos of when we were young. This photo was taken at the arbor at the Auckland Domain. Because of family reasons we were married in the Auckland Registry Office and our witnesses were Val’s nephew Roy and niece Marilyn. No one attended from my family…
A Visit to Torbay
After arriving back at the hotel we freshen up and pickup the car from the concierge. Then off we go to Torbay to visit my stepfather Derek. He has recently moved from Glen Innes to Torbay, much to everyone’s relief. It took a bit of organizing as he and Gwen had lived in the old place for a great many years. So we head over the Auckland Harbour Bridge and onto the Northern Motorway. Of course we don’t have a map that goes out as far as Torbay so it will be a matter of winging it. Never mind I…
A Family Visit to Maraetai
Today we are heading off to visit my brothers, Derek, Ralph and Gavin and their repective partners, Jackie, Vicky and Gilly. I am so looking forward to seeing them. We will be having a barbeque and a few drinks and a bit of a yarn in true kiwi fashion. I have managed to get the timer off pat now so I am able to join the group for photos without too much trouble. So from left to right at the back we have me, Vickie, Gilly, Gavin, Jackie and in the front is Val, Ralph and Derek. Missing from the…
Off to Whangarei on a Family Visit
The next morning we set out bright and early to drive to Whangarei to see Val’s nephew. Funnily enough Roy is actually 6 months older than his uncle Val. We stopped for lunch at the Country Kitchen in Wellsford and had really nice fish and chips. The cafe is neat and clean and the staff are friendly and helpful. The food is tasty and there is a good variety available. Well worth stopping when you are travelling north from Auckland. It was so exciting when we finally arrived, after taking a few wrong turns and having to phone Kay (Roy’s…
