Keeping Passengers Cool on Commercial Aircraft

Aircraft Air Conditioning
The temperature in an airplane cabin is managed, in part, by an Air Cycle Machine (ACM). The ACM acts as the refrigeration unit to provide cool air in pressurized aircraft. An aircraft typically has two or three of these ACM machines arranged in a system called a “pack”. The ACM packs are typically located near the main landing gear.

The cooling process does not require Freon or other chemical refrigerants. Instead, an ACM uses air to cool the air by expanding and contracting the volume of air. This system has some very distinct benefits over a chemical coolant system.

One of the major benefits of this system is that no condensation is created during the cooling process, allowing the cooled air to be used both in the cabin and for controlling the temperature of electronic equipment without the need for a dehumidifier. The working fluid air is freely available, safe and non-toxic.ACM’s are very reliable, have low maintenance costs and down-timeAn air cycle machine can also output heat.

How the ACM Works
You might be wondering how air can be used to cool air. Air is first compressed and then the heat removed. This volume of air is then expanded to a lower temperature than before it was compressed. Work must be removed from the air during the expansion. Work is removed from the air by an expansion turbine. Energy from the air is consumed as the blades are driven around by the expanding air.The energy of the spinning turbine can be used to run other devices, such as generators or fans. Typically, it is used to power a bootstrapped compressor, which raises the compressed (hot) side pressure further without additional external energy, recycling the energy from the expanding air to compress the high pressure air further. The elevation in pressure on the hot side further increases the temperature and makes the ACM produce more useable heat. The cold air from the turbine can be a refrigerant either directly or indirectly by means of a heat exchanger.

The ACM overhaul and repair process is necessary to maintain operation. Over time, internal parts wear and can cause damage to the unit if not properly maintained.

Going Green Reminds Me of Tulum !

Everywhere you turn lately, someone or something is telling you to definitely Go Green!  Years ago, going green meant with envy, however today people are getting hip to the fact our environment is in turmoil and it’s on us to aid insure that it is a better place.

Now, I’m no Greenpeace Activist, nevertheless I do my part.  I recycle.  I shut down lights.  I even purchased those dreadful spiral illumination bulbs for our lamps in my domicile.  With many people, these tiny life changes are adequate.  For people who desire to do more, one can find surprisingly many things they can do to decrease their carbon trace in the world.

Ever consider going green on your vacation?  Recently, I visited Tulum, a small seaside town approximately 90 minutes south of Cancun.  While the jungle makes up more than 90 % of the environment, it’s not exactly the green I’m chatting about.  For years, Tulum has been the host to a increasing number of eco-friendly resorts.  These Tulum hotels manage virtually solely on wind and solar power although numerous do retain gas or diesel powered back-up generators just in case.  Most of the eco resorts do use wind and solar to make the bulk of their power needs.

In Tulum, these eco-cabana resorts line the unspoiled beaches leading into Sian Ka’an Biosphere, a 1.3-million-acre nature reserve stretching down the Caribbean coast.  These resorts offer a variety from rustic cabanas situated on the beach to comfortable adobe-style rooms.  Smaller compared to the major resorts in Cancun however, most don’t lack in services.  Numerous resorts like Playa Azul and Los Lirios Cabana Resort and the super opulent Blue Tulum Hotel offer full spa services from beach-side massages to skin sessions using natural Mayan skincare products.  Just about all of them have restaurants that dish up delicious, gourmet food well into the evening.  The range of options was a pleasant surprise!

My first visit to an eco-friendly resort was a couple of years ago in Tulum.  I’m no camper, by any means, so when I read the quick inventory of gear to take, my anxiety level went up a degree upon seeing flashlight as among the list of must-haves.

A flashlight? I thought.  What’s up with the electricity?  There is none past 11pm, that’s what!  Immediately, many people would never even consider staying in a place that doesn’t have full electrical power running 24 hours each day, 7 days a week.  However, I was desperate for the holiday.  I figured I’d pay a visit to what this whole eco-resort craze was all about.

It was 2006 and my first occasion in Tulum.  I’ve been back 3 times since!  My experience was spectacular.  Being at the seaside takes care of the worry that it’s going to be excessively hot in the room without A/C.  The lights being turned off past 11pm wasn’t a problem at all.  I had my flashlight, nevertheless there were also Tiki torches lighting up the entire property, so yeah, electrical energy wasn’t sorely missed at all.  On the whole, my initial venture into eco-tourism was no different than any other vacation I’d had in the past.

I ought to note that some of the  eco resorts in Tulum do have 24 hour electrical power, except you should definitely make sure those facts before departing if that is a priority for you.

The need to be green has reached way past the Greenpeace set.  Think about it and think about doing greater than your part.
