We flew over from Australia to see Cher in concert as we are both avid Cher fans. We had read the reviews prior to going to the concert which gave us some idea of what to expect.
So I have decided to write this review from both the perspective of a diehard fan and also from the point of view of someone who is not necessarily a fan.
Our seats are up in the gods and we have a great view of the stage. We are sitting next to a sorghum farmer from Ohio, and we chat away about the rotten weather in our respective hometowns at this time, while we wait for the show to start.
And then the light dims and the show starts with Cher coming down from the ceiling in an ornate gold throne. She lands on the stage and is helped from the harness by two well defined young men. And from then on the show is full on. Cher sings her popular songs and there are film clips of her early years with Sonny on the Sonny and Cher Show.
During the course of the night there are several costume changes but the dancers and acrobatic acts fill in the time between Cher’s appearances. The dancers nicely lead into the songs and I love it when a gypsy caravan is placed in the center of the stage. This leads nicely into ‘Gypsies, Tramps and Thieves’ and my all time favorite ‘Dark Lady’. The caravan also gives Cher a place to change onstage.
There were a couple of downers for me, a couple of rather ill placed comments that I felt would have been better left unsaid. I think she needs to rethink her patter, not even fans like to know that she thinks of them inconsequential. She didn’t engage very well with the audience and appeared to be somewhat self absorbed. However, the entertainment value was fine, Cher’s costumes were stunning and her voice was strong and clear. From a fan’s point of view the show was entertaining, the supporting dancers and acrobats – superb, the costumes – extravagant, skimpy and colorful, and Cher – well pretty good for the time she actually appears onstage.
From a non fan’s point of view, there was not enough of Cher onstage, there were too many costume changes, too much of the video footage of the old shows and scenes from Cher’s movies, and too much of the dance and acrobat acts.
But you can’t please everyone and if Cher goes back to Vegas I know there will be plenty of fans who will be eager to go and see her.
If yousaw and liked Cher s Believe and Farewell Concert Tours, this show is very similar. Though she has a few more costume changes. It s a Vegas show, not a concert, which is why she changes so often. I walked to the half price booth once, and turned around quickly. I d rahter pay more than stand in that line.
