On our recent visit to Sydney we took a stroll around Darling Harbour to look for somewhere to eat. We had read on TripAdvisor that the Meat and Wine Company was pretty good for steaks so we decided to give it a go.
We got in at around 5.30 and were told that the place was booked however as we were early they could fit us in but we would need to be out by 6.45pm. That was fine by us as we figured we could make it if we didn’t have dessert.
The restaurant itself felt warm and inviting. The lighting was perfect – dark but not overly so and the lighting over the tables themselves was light enough to easily read the menu.
The music playing was easy listening and unobtrusive so it we could chat comfortably without having to raise our voices.
The staff were wonderful, very friendly and superbly helpful. We couldn’t fault them for their service and attentiveness.
I ordered the Wagyu beef (300g)which had been grain fed for 500 days and it came with plenty of chips and a mushroom sauce and served on a platter for $59. The beef was to die for – beautifully cooked, moist and tasty, and it practically melted in your mouth. The chips were crisp and tasty and beautifully prepared. The mushroom sauce was good but nothing to rave over. I found that Paula’s truffle butter sauce was tastier.
Paula ordered the Signature Cut which is grain fed for 130 days. It was the monte gold fillet 250g char grilled and served with mushroom and truffle butter and hand cut chips and roasted vine ripened cherry tomatoes. The meal came to $55. Paula raved about her meat (until she tried my steak which was we both agreed was definitely nicer). The truffle butter was beautiful. However, there could have been more chips in her dish. She had 6 chips and although they were large, it just wasn’t enough and she ended up sharing some of mine as I had plenty.
We also ordered a side of seasonal vegetables for $8 and included green beans, bok choy and snow peas. All beautifully cooked and tasty.
The difference between the two cuts of meat was amazing. When comparing my Wagyu steak with Paula’s signature cut I could tell just how good the Wagyu really is. Even though Paula’s steak was pretty amazing, mine was so much more tender and tasty – it simply melted in the mouth.
Overall these were some of the best steaks we’ve ever had and we will definitely go back to the Meat & Wine Co next time we are back to Sydney.
