So here we are on our first morning in Steinhagen. The wedding celebration that we have travelled from Australia to celebrate is still a few days away. But we have plenty to do in the meantime.
We have today free as we have been advised that it is a public holiday so nothing will be open, but we decide to go for an early morning stroll to the shops anyway, just in case (like in Australia) there is a shop that just may be open on a public holiday. Of course the girls can’t resist a bit of fun to brighten up the start to the day.
It’s a beautiful day for a walk, not too hot. The town isn’t too far from where we are staying. It’s so quiet and the town is very pleasant to walk through. There are lots of trees to provide shade and the gardens are all beautifully kept. Steinhagen really has a nice feel to it. We decide there and then that we all want to move here to live. Apparently the township is know for making Schnapps from Juniper Berries. Unfortunately, we are unable to try the drink as the all the shops are shut.
In 2017 the estimated population in Steinhagen was approx 20,715 people. So there is no bustling traffic and hoards of people to contend with when you are walking around. Those few brave souls who have also ventured out early this morning are happy to respond to our awful sounding German greetings.
After walking down a few streets, we come across this peaceful scene as we cross the bridge over this watercourse.
Fishing and feeding the ducks is prohibited, as is entering the area when it is iced over. Which will obviously be in winter as there isn’t a drop of ice to be seen anywhere on this beautiful sunny morning.
The shops are nearby, and sure enough none of them are open. Looks like we will have to wait until tomorrow to pick up supplies. We decide that it’s time to head back for breakfast. We know that Sebastian has a full day planned for us.
The dining room is large and easily accommodates everyone comfortably. Breakfast is a delicious spread of bread, cheeses, meats, liverwurst and a variety home made jam made from the fruit in Gerlinde’s garden.
There are beautiful pot plants and ornaments hiding in amongst the greenery, so there is always something interesting to find hidden away. Seb welcomes us all to breakfast.
It’s not long before breakfast is served. Everything tastes delicious, I love the bread rolls and the liverwurst, very nice.
In the evening we eat dinner by fairy lights. It’s very welcoming and relaxing after a long day.
Gerlinde has a beautiful array of flowers and ferns in the Conservatory, I am taken with the deep purple colour of these flowers, the colour is really quite spectacular.
